New Delhi: Manchester United have started their pre-season campaign with a goalless draw against Leeds United at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm on Saturday, July 19.
The Ruben Amorim side finished in the 15th position, scoring just 44 goals in the last season, and there was not much improvement in front of the goal despite the debut of new signing Matheus Cunha, who played the first half.
Leeds looked more dangerous during the 90-minute match and had more possession in the first half. They created better chances than Manchester United to take the lead, but were not clinical enough.
The 17-year-old striker Chido Obi started the match alongside Cunha and Bruno had a brilliant first half as he tested Leeds' goalkeeper. Chido then took the ball off Cunha's toes inside the box — a clear sign that Amorim’s attacking setup still needs a lot of work on the training ground.
Casemiro's deflected cross hit the Leeds crossbar in the stoppage time of the first half. Amorim changed his entire starting XI at half-time, but Leeds created more chances in the second half with Jayden Bogle and Largie Ramazani denied by Tom Heaton.
The United players appealed for a penalty as Patrick Dorgu was brought down by Sam Chambers, but the referee denied it, and the wing-back then forced Illan Meslier into a good save. The Red Devils created their best chance of the match when Kobbie Mainoo hit the crossbar in the 90th minute before Ayden Heaven was stopped.
Head coach Ruben Amorim shared his thoughts about the game to MUTV and said that it was a pre-season game and his team suffered a little bit when they tried to press high. He also praised the opposition team, saying that they kicked the ball high and won the second balls and were dangerous in those moments.
"We have a lack of pace. Especially in the middle of the park, you can feel it's hard to bring the ball. But we created chances. We have a lot to do, but it was a first test against a Premier League team with two different teams," he added.
