New Delhi: Real Madrid's defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to be ruled out for the next two months after suffering a thigh muscle injury in his left leg.

He had an MRI scan on Thursday, which verified the extent of the injury and intensified the concerns of the Spanish club after he was forced out of a 3-0 La Liga victory against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.

Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid ahead of the 2025 season from Liverpool, is set to miss more than 13 games, including the rest of the Champions League group stage and a string of domestic games.

"Following tests carried out today on our player Trent Alexander-Arnold by Real Madrid's medical services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris muscle of his left leg. His recovery will be monitored," the club said.

According to club sources, Trent is set to miss the club's important games in December and January, including Champions League matches against Manchester City, AS Monaco and Benfica, the Spanish Super Cup in January and at least six La Liga games. His return to the football pitch is tentatively scheduled for February, though recovery timelines could vary depending on his rehabilitation progress.

Real Madrid short of right-backs

Trent's injury is a massive setback for Real Madrid, as the 33-year-old Dani Carvajal is still recovering from the arthroscopic knee surgery, which he suffered on October 28.

Carvajal returned briefly in late October after a long absence due to a ligament tear in his knee before undergoing a new procedure. He is targeting January’s Spanish Super Cup for his return to football.

Without both players, Real Madrid are facing a shortage on the right side of defence. Head coach Xabi Alonso may be forced to reshuffle his team, potentially using centre-backs or midfielders as makeshift right-backs for the busy month ahead.
