New Delhi: The Laver Cup 2025 is just around the corner, and speculation is rife over why 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will not be featuring in the Roger Federer-inspired event. The Serbian has reportedly turned down Federer’s request, stating that he wants to dedicate more time to his family.
Djokovic was part of Team Europe when they lifted the trophy in 2018 and also appeared in 2022. A huge crowd favourite, the 38-year-old continues to defy age with his performances across the season. However, this will be the third consecutive edition of the Laver Cup that Djokovic has declined, even after Federer’s efforts to convince him to return.
In 2023, during a conversation with Barbara Schett after the Laver Cup, Federer was asked which players he would like to see on Team Europe the following year. Without hesitation, the Swiss maestro named Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
“I would like to see Novak again, to be honest,” Federer said at the time. “I would love to see actually [Carlos] Alcaraz and Novak on the same team. Love to see that happen.”
Around the same period last year, Djokovic made it clear that he planned to reduce his workload and spend more time with his family. True to his word, he has stuck to that approach in 2024 and 2025, choosing carefully where to compete. Recently, the Serbian moved with his family to Athens, Greece. He was even spotted with his son Stefan watching Greece’s Davis Cup tie against Brazil.
Although skipping the Laver Cup, Djokovic is expected to feature at the end of the season. He has already confirmed his participation in the Athens tournament, an ATP 250 event starting November 2, followed by the ATP Finals in Turin a week later.
“I’m planning to play the Athens tournament, that’s for sure. But other than that, it’s still a question mark,” Djokovic said earlier this year.
For now, Federer’s dream of seeing Djokovic and Alcaraz on the same Laver Cup team will have to wait, as the Serb remains committed to balancing tennis with his family life.
