New Delhi: The work ethic of Elon Musk has always been a fascination; however, one of his ex-X staff has provided a closer insight into the detail of how gruelling his day-to-day schedule is. Another former employee of Musk, Chris Bakke, claimed that the billionaire has a 24/7 schedule, which includes late-night meetings, coordination between multiple firms, and even office naps at 2 AM. His day starts with Tesla and goes deep into the night, changing teams and duties.
The story told by Bakke creates a picture of a leader that nearly structures his life strictly around work. Musk is known to work seven days a week and schedule meetings too early and then go to sleep at short intervals before the cycle repeats. Although the speed may be regarded as drastic, it is consistent with the long-held Musk philosophy that the only way to achieve success is to outwork his/her rivals.
Musk spends the first ten hours of his day with the Tesla team, according to Bakke. It is thereafter that he moves to the X product meetings, which usually commence at about 5 or 6 PM. Each check-in was to take place at 10 PM but usually was moved to the latest possible time, typically until midnight or 1 AM.
At the office, Musk would sleep a few minutes, approximately at 2 AM after marathon meetings. He would then start another set of work hours in his companies after a couple of hours. According to Bakke, this routine was seven days a week without holidays.
A hyper-busy schedule is not the first characteristic of Musk. He has made numerous remarks concerning the importance of long hours. In a 2014 speech at USC, he added that a significant benefit of working harder than others is a big plus. He has over the years been telling of sleeping in offices and battling through production hurdles by sleeping on the factory floor.
It is indicative of the magnitude of the attention of Musk as described by Bakke. Driving several businesses, having late-night reviews, and having to work after a little break can be seen as a lifestyle which not many people can reflect. To its fans, it brings out unparalleled ambition. To others it is a warning on the price of extreme dedication.
