65-year-old Indian man among 5 killed in New York bus crash

The New York Police has disclosed the identities of the victims who died in the bus accident on Friday. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but officials confirmed that the driver, 55-year-old Bin Shao of Flushing, NY, showed no signs of impairment and the bus had no mechanical issues.

New Delhi: At least five people were killed in New York bus crash, of whom one has been identified as a 65-year-old Indian man. The victim is identified as Shankar Kumar Jha, a resident of Bihar's Madhubani in India. The accident took place on Friday when a bus carrying 54 passengers,  travelling from Niagara Falls rolled over near the town of Pembroke. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

Reports say that the New York Police identified the victims who lost their lives in the crash. The deceased are identified as  Pinki Changrani, 60, of East Brunswick, New Jersey; Xie Hongzhuo, 22, a Columbia University student from Beijing, China; Zhang Xiaolan, 55, of Jersey City, New Jersey; and Jian Mingli, 56, also of Jersey City.

Rescue operations

According to the New York Police, the vehicle exited the roadway into the median then abruptly corrected causing the bus to overturn and roll off the I-90 on the south embankment. Even as the rescue team was able to eject several passengers, 5 trapped passengers couldn't be saved. Eight helicopters were used in the rescue operation, as per the president of Mercy Flight, Margaret Ferrentino, a non-profit air ambulance provider, who spoke to AFP. The injured passengers were immediately taken to Erie County Medical Center, Strong Memorial Hospital, Millard Fillmore Suburban and UMMR in Batavia. Mercy Flight and numerous EMS and first responders also assisted at the scene.

Investigations underway

In its previous statements, the police ruled out the possibilities of mechanical failure, driver impairment and intoxication as causes of the New York bus crash. The driver, identified as Bin Shao, 55, of Flushing, New York, showed no signs of impairment, and the vehicle had no mechanical issues. 

The cause of the accident is still unknown. “The driver is alive and well – we’re working with him. We believe we have a good idea of what happened, why the bus lost control. We just want to make sure that all the details are thoroughly vetted,” a police spokesman said earlier.
