Brown University shooting leaves 2 dead, 8 injured; FBI on scene as manhunt continues

At least two people were killed and eight others injured in a shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island on Saturday, triggering a massive security response and a manhunt for the suspect. New Delhi: At least two people were killed and eight others injured in a shooting at Brown University in the US on Saturday. Preliminary investigations suggest that the shooter was dressed in black and was seen fleeing the scene after the attack.

Meanwhile, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley urged residents to stay indoors, lock their doors, and avoid returning home until the situation is fully under control. He said authorities were deploying all available resources to locate the suspect. The mayor added that the eight injured victims were in critical but stable condition, but refused to comment on whether those affected were students.

A Brown University student told the Associated Press that he was working on a project when he heard sirens and later received a text alert warning of an active shooter outside. “I’m just in here shaking,” the student said.

Another student, who was some distance away from the crime scene, said students in a lab near the Barus & Holley building hid under desks and turned off the lights after receiving the emergency alert.

President Trump reacts

Reacting to the shooting, President Donald Trump addressed the incident in brief remarks at the White House, saying, “All we can do right now is pray for the victims.”

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said he had been briefed on the shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island and confirmed that the FBI was on the scene. He initially said the suspect was in custody but later clarified that this was not the case, citing university police.

Vice President JD Vance also reacted to the incident, writing on X, “Terrible news out of Rhode Island this evening. We’re all monitoring the situation, and the FBI stands ready to do anything to help. We’re all thinking of and praying for the victims tonight.”
