Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that his forces have captured nearly 5,000 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory this year, stating that Russia now holds the strategic initiative across the battlefield. Ukraine, however, has rejected Moscow's claims, characterising the latest alleged advances as limited and unsustainable. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy countered, stating that Kyiv's forces have instead made tactical gains in Donetsk and successfully pushed back Russian units near the Sumy border region. The situation on the ground remains highly fluid, with both sides trading conflicting claims of progress amid ongoing strikes and counter-offensives.
