Donald Trump has asserted that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi guaranteed that India would discontinue its purchases of Russian oil. Speaking at the White House, the former US President characterised this alleged commitment as a crucial move towards economically isolating Moscow.
Trump indicated that he had previously conveyed concerns to Prime Minister Modi regarding India’s continued importation of Russian crude, which the US believes contributes to funding Russia's military actions.
Trump described India as a dependable ally and referred to Prime Minister Modi as a "friend" with whom he shares a strong relationship. He acknowledged that stopping oil shipments would not be immediate, terming it "a little bit of a process" that would conclude "very soon." Despite Trump's definitive claims, New Delhi has yet to officially confirm any assurance from Prime Minister Modi regarding a halt to Russian oil imports.
