US President Donald Trump has reignited debate over Greenlands future, renewing his demand for US control over the territory. Citing Greenlands strategic location and mineral resources, Trump has described it as vital for US national security and warned against growing Russian or Chinese influence, stating that "all options remain on the table."
These remarks coincide with talks at the White House involving US Vice President J.D. Vance and the Foreign Ministers of Denmark and Greenland. Despite Trumps assertions, Denmark and Greenland have unequivocally stated that the island is not for sale, characterising any threats of force as reckless.
Their stance has received support from several European Union countries. In response to the escalating geopolitical interest in the Arctic, Sweden has announced plans to deploy military officers to Greenland at Denmarks request. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson indicated that this move reflects enhanced coordination among Nordic and NATO allies on Arctic security. Both Denmark and Greenland are also intensifying their military presence and cooperation with NATO, including expanded defence exercises scheduled until 2026, highlighting the regions increasing strategic importance.
