The conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, with the Donbas region emerging as a critical battleground and negotiating point. This industrialised heartland, encompassing Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, holds immense economic and strategic importance for both Ukraine and Russia.

Its estimated value of $12 trillion stems from its significant reserves of coal, lithium, gas, tantalum, cesium, and strontium – vital resources for energy production, various industries, and even defense capabilities. Coal reserves alone account for over 56% of Ukraine's total energy production.

Reports suggest a proposed deal between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, where Russia would cease its offensive in exchange for Ukraine surrendering control over Donbas. This proposition underscores the regions strategic significance. Control over Donbas grants access to vital water resources crucial for the agricultural sector in southern Ukraine and the water supply to Crimea.

Currently, Russia controls approximately 88% of Donbas, leaving only the area around Pokrovsk under Ukrainian control. The fierce battles around Pokrovsk and northern Donetsk highlight the significance of this frontline clash. Ukrainian forces are actively trying to prevent further Russian advances. President Zelenskyy's reported rejection of Putin's proposal underscores the profound strategic and economic implications of ceding Donbas.

For Ukraine, losing this region would be a devastating economic blow, severely hampering its ability to sustain the war effort. The immense mineral wealth and strategic geographic location of Donbas make it a critical asset. The continued conflict in Donbas, therefore, remains a key factor determining the trajectory and potential resolution of the broader conflict in Ukraine. The situation remains highly volatile, demanding careful observation and analysis.
