Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan, wife Bushra Bibi sentenced to 17 years in Toshakhana-2 case

New Delhi: A special court of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday sentenced Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years' imprisonment each in the Toshakhana-2 corruption case.

The case pertains to the alleged illegal purchase of an expensive Bulgari jewellery set gifted to Imran Khan by the Saudi Crown Prince during an official visit in May 2021. Prosecutors said the luxury gift was acquired at a throwaway price in violation of Toshakhana rules, amounting to a breach of trust and fraud against the state.

The verdict was delivered by Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand during proceedings held inside Rawalpindi's high-security Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is currently incarcerated. Court proceedings were conducted inside the jail citing security reasons.

In addition to the jail term, the court convicted both under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code and imposed fines totalling Pakistani Rs 16.4 million on them. Jail officials said both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were present in court when the judgment was pronounced.

The Toshakhana-2 case was initially investigated by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) before being transferred to the FIA following amendments to accountability laws. The FIA filed its charge sheet in September 2024, and formal charges were framed on December 12, 2024. While the couple was earlier acquitted in the Toshakhana-1 case, the conviction in the second case has significantly deepened Imran Khan's legal troubles.

The latest verdict comes amid allegations by his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), that Imran Khan is being subjected to prolonged solitary confinement in jail, claims that have also drawn international attention, including concern from the United Nations.
