Indian-origin cab driver sexually assaults woman in US after she becomes unconscious

New Delhi: In a horrific incident, an Indian-origin cab driver has reportedly raped a passenger in California, United States, after the victim became unconscious.

How did it happen?

The alleged perpetrator has been identified as 35-year-old Simranjit Singh Sekhon. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office stated that the police have arrested him after probing the sexual assault incident of a 21-year-old adult female.

In November 2025, the police began to probe Sekhon after it was reported to the Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit that an alleged assault had taken place in Camarillo. As per detectives, Sekhon, who lives in Bakersfield, may have assaulted more victims, with those incidents going unreported.

On November 27, he reportedly picked up the victim from a bar with the destination being her home in Camarillo. The victim was reportedly intoxicated and passed out during the ride, and Sekhon allegedly took advantage of that and sexually assaulted the unconscious victim.

What is next for the perpetrator?

On December 15, police arrested Sekhon and booked him. He was taken to the court for his arraignment, where he pleaded not guilty. The court set his bail at $500,000, and he will next appear in court on December 29.

Police did not specify which rideshare company the suspect was working for during the alleged incident or any other details about the driver's status in the country.

The news came at a time when Indian-origin drivers are under fire in the United States and Canada for several reasons, including traffic violations and driving under the influence of drugs. The police are yet to reveal further details about the driver.
