Mahatma Gandhi Statue Vandalised in London Ahead of Gandhi Jayanti

A disturbing act of vandalism has occurred at Tavistock Square, London, where the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was defaced with graffiti. The incident took place just days before the world observes Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Non-Violence. The bronze monument, which has stood since 1968, serves as a tribute to the Father of the Nation and his enduring legacy of non-violence.

The High Commission of India in London issued a strong condemnation of the desecration, characterising it as "a violent attack on the very idea of non-violence." Officials from the Indian mission are actively coordinating with the Metropolitan Police and Camden Council to ensure swift action and facilitate the statues immediate restoration.

Every year on 2nd October, Tavistock Square transforms into a site of reflection and tribute for Gandhi Jayanti. This act of vandalism raises concerns regarding respect for a legacy that continues to inspire millions globally, particularly as investigations into the incident commence.
