New York man, wearing neck chain, dies after being pulled into MRI machine

A 61-year-old man tragically died after being pulled into a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine at a medical facility in New York. The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon at Nassau Open MRI, a diagnostic centre located in Westbury, Long Island.

According to Nassau County Police, the man entered the MRI room without authorisation while the machine was active. He was wearing a large metal necklace at the time. The powerful magnetic field of the MRI scanner caused the chain to be pulled into the machine, dragging the man along with it.

Police said the force caused him to suffer a "medical episode." He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead from his injuries at 2:36 pm on Thursday.

MRI machines use extremely strong magnets, which is why strict safety rules are in place. Patients are normally required to remove all metal objects and change into hospital gowns before entering the scanner room. Even small items like jewellery, belts or coins can become dangerous projectiles when near an active MRI.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns on its website, “Careful screening of people and objects entering the MR environment is critical to ensure nothing enters the magnet area that may become a projectile.”

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
