Washington: In a big move, US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that his country won’t attend this year’s G20 Summit to be held in South Africa. Earlier Vice President JD Vance was supposed to attend. In his announcement, the President cited ‘mistreatment of white farmers in the African nation.

Taking to the social media site Truth, Trump said it was a total disgrace that the summit is being held in South Africa this year. He observed that Afrikaners are being poorly treated and their land are being confiscated. He added that the US won’t attend till these Human Rights abuses continue.

Trump shares message on Truth

"It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa. Afrikaners (People who are descended from Dutch settlers, and also French and German immigrants) are being killed and slaughtered, and their land and farms are being illegally confiscated. No US Government Official will attend as long as these Human Rights abuses continue. I look forward to hosting the 2026 G20 in Miami, Florida," Trump wrote on Truth.

It may be noted that the US has accused South Africa of human rights violations for a long time and has allowed the persecution of white Afrikaner farmers. Trump had also suggested earlier that South Africa must be removed from G20. South Africa, on the other hand, have always denied these allegations. Earlier this year, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also skipped the foreign ministers' summit.

South Africa expresses surprise over allegations

Reacting to Trump’s statement, South Africa expressed its surprise over the accusation of discrimination, since whites in the country mostly have a much higher standard of living as compared to Black residents, even more than three decades after the apartheid system of white minority rule ended in the country.
