Trump slaps new tariffs on dozens of nations, India among worst-hit with 25% rate, Pakistan's rate slashed

US President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs of up to 40 percent on goods imported from dozens of countries on Thursday. India, Taiwan, and South Africa are among the worst-hit with tariffs of 25 per cent, 40 per cent, and 30 per cent, respectively, imposed on their exports to the US. Syria faces the highest rate at 41 per cent, followed by Laos and Myanmar at 40 per cent. These tariffs are set to take effect immediately.

Imposition of tariff triggers political reactions

The imposition of tariffs by the US President has sparked sharp political reactions in India. The Congress party strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, blaming his 2019 "Howdy, Modi!" event and perceived closeness to Trump for the setback. “India is now paying the price of Modi’s friendship,” the party said on X. Congress MPs Mallu Ravi and Rajiv Shukla called the move as a "threat" and a "slap".

AAP MP Sanjay Singh also spoke about the tariff threats and accused the Prime Minister of "insulting India everyday." He added that Trump has threatened Apple against manufacturing iPhones in India. He has even gone on to say that he loves Pakistan and India should think about it. He also asked PM Modi to strongly oppose this move and maker his next step clear.
