PLI scheme drives India's electronics manufacturing growth & exports

Mobile Manufacturing recorded unprecedented growth under Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI). India's Mobile Phone exports surged 127 times in a decade. It grew from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 2 Lakh Crore.

New Delhi: The Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) has immensely helped mobile manufacturing in India. The Union Ministry of Electronics & IT on 23rd July 2025 informed about the initiatives taken by the government to enhance the telecom sector.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, presented a written reply in the Lok Sabha to mention the details. Total FDI in the field of electronics manufacturing from FY 2020-21 to 2024-25, stands at USD 4,071 million, while cumulative FDI recorded at USD 2,802 million, which was contributed by MeitY PLI beneficiaries.

In the last 10 years, several PLI Schemes were introduced which resulted in the establishment of a strong electronics manufacturing ecosystem in India.

The Government initiatives include, PLI for large scale electronics manufacturing, PLI for IT hardware, Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors and

Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC and EMC 2.0) scheme.

In the last decade, the government aggressively pitched for Make in India products to prioritise domestically manufactured products in public procurement.

The government implemented tax reforms and rationalised tariff structure, like exemption on basic custom duty on capital goods, etc.

The government gave green signal to 100 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in electronics manufacturing, subject to applicable laws / regulations.

The PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing (LSEM) has significantly helped the Mobile manufacturing sector in India which resulted in the country becoming a net exporter of mobile phones. India is now the second largest mobile manufacturing country in the world.

The PLI Scheme for LSEM: Total Investment of Rs 12,390 crore, resulted in production of Rs 8,44,752 crore with exports of Rs 4,65,809 crore and generated additional employment of 1,30,330 (direct jobs) till June 2025.

The PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware: Investment of Rs 717.13 crore, led to a cumulative production of Rs 12,195.84 crore and generated additional employment of 5,056 (direct jobs) till June 2025.
