New Delhi: To streamline the postal system and improve the postal services in the country, the government has taken many initiatives in recent years. The Post Office has a huge network across the country and offers several services like mail delivery, including parcels, letters, and registered items. It also offers financial services like savings accounts, insurance, and money transfer services.
The Ministry of Communications informed that 450 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) were established to enhance the access and outreach of Passport services across the country.
188 Parcel Hubs have also been set up to significantly strengthen and ensure operational efficiency and consistency.
The government had implemented the Post Office Act, 2023 on 18 June 2024, which called for establishing a simplified and technology-neutral framework focused on digital governance and service delivery transformation.
The Mail Network Optimization Project (MNOP) was introduced for adopting the hub-and-spoke model, and modernisation of sorting and mail processing facilities.
The digitisation of services has helped Post Office with Real-time tracking for Speed Post, Registered Post, and Parcels.
The service was introduced through a mobile-based delivery app and SMS notification system, which notified the customers about booking and delivery status.
To bring in more transparency and efficiency, electronic clearance of letter boxes and real-time GPS tracking of departmental vehicles have been given to the Post Office.
Now, the Post Office also offers Online booking facility which helps individuals to book the articles online.
The establishment of 188 Parcel Hubs ensures operational efficiency and consistency. 234 Nodal Delivery Centers have been set up covering over 1600 PIN codes. It handles 30% of total parcels delivered daily.
A Parcel Packaging Policy has been implemented with 1408 Parcel Packaging Units
At present there are more than Aadhaar services 13,352 post offices across the country which offer enrolment, biometric update and demographic correction facilities.
In 2018, Post Payments Bank (IPPB) was launched which helped the establishment of over 1.64 lakh Branch Post Offices to provide digital banking services.
Postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) have been given smartphones and biometric devices. e-Money Order and e-Postal Order are available for the public. India Post has also entered multiple partnerships to provide doorstep financial verification services.
