New Delhi: The capital city of Delhi is poised for a sweeping transformation of its road network after the Centre cleared funding of Rs 803.4 crore for a large-scale upgrade of arterial roads and flyovers across the Capital. Officials say the plan marks one of the most ambitious infrastructure drives the city has seen in recent years.

The scheme, sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), will cover more than 140 individual projects. These will range from resurfacing and widening to strengthening key routes, building new corridors, and upgrading heavily used flyovers.

Key Delhi roads to undergo transformation

Among the most prominent stretches earmarked for improvement are sections of the Ring Road, the AIIMS–Ashram corridor, Mathura Road, and the ISBT Kashmiri Gate–Wazirabad link. Roads leading to Delhi University, including Chhatra Marg, and major connectors such as Vivek Vihar–GT Road, Dwarka Approach Road, and Rani Jhansi Road are also set for upgrades.

Work on the Rani Jhansi and Wazirabad flyovers has been cleared as part of the same package.

Road redevelopment project spread across Delhi

The projects are spread across the Capital. In Central and New Delhi, attention will focus on the ITO Loop, Ferozeshah Road, and new flyover works along Rohtak Road. South Delhi will see improvements to Press Enclave Road and the Nizamuddin–Kalkaji stretch, while a new connection linking Aali Vihar and Sarita Vihar is planned for the south-east. In East Delhi, Vikas Marg will undergo rehabilitation, and the Noida Link Road will be widened. Shahdara will see strengthening of the Vivek Vihar–GT Road connector.

North-East Delhi is set to benefit from work on the Loni Chakkar–Delhi border road, alongside new flyovers at Road No. 63 and Gokulpuri. Meanwhile, in the west and south-west, the Outer Ring Road between Vikas Puri and Najafgarh will be reinforced, and an elevated flyover will rise between Rajouri Garden and Tagore Garden.

Authorities have assured that efforts will be made to minimise disruption during construction.
