New Delhi: The NCR is set to see a major connectivity boost as the Centre has cleared a new 30-km expressway that will link Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and the upcoming Jewar International Airport. The road will run alongside the existing Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, following the Yamuna River’s course. It will connect the current Pushta Road with both the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and the Yamuna Expressway, according to a News18 report.

The proposal, first suggested by Gautam Buddha Nagar MP Dr Mahesh Sharma, recently got support from Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. During his visit to the Jewar airport site for a plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, Gadkari confirmed that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will carry out the project and assured that funds will not be a hurdle.

Part of bigger plan to boost infra

This expressway is part of a bigger plan to upgrade infrastructure across Delhi-NCR. Gadkari said projects worth Rs 1.2 lakh crore are already under way in the region, with nearly half of the work finished. He also added that another Rs 40,000–50,000 crore will be invested in the coming years.

The idea of building the riverside expressway was given in-principle clearance by the Noida Authority in March 2025. It was seen as an important step to ease traffic on the busy Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary had asked the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) to take up the project with costs to be shared between Noida, Greater Noida, and Yamuna Expressway Authorities. But Noida officials suggested that NHAI should handle it for better execution and steady funding. With the Centre’s approval, the plan is now expected to move forward, pending NHAI’s final nod.

New expressway to ease traffic

At present, the 25-km Noida-Greater Noida Expressway handles about 5 lakh vehicles daily. Nearly 2 lakh vehicles enter through the DND Flyway, while the rest come via Chilla Border, Kalindi Kunj, and busy Noida sectors like 15, 16, 18, and 37. This heavy load has led to severe congestion, especially during peak hours.

Dr Mahesh Sharma said the new expressway will act as a bypass, letting vehicles from Delhi reach Jewar Airport directly without adding to the Noida Expressway’s traffic. He stressed that to use Jewar Airport’s full potential, building a direct and efficient road link is urgent.

Better connectivity to Jewar Airport

Back in 2014, about 11 km of the Yamuna Pushta Road was opened to the public, but it quickly developed potholes within a year and saw little use due to safety concerns. Officials now want to avoid that mistake by using stronger design standards and long-lasting planning under NHAI’s supervision.

The timing of this project is crucial as the Noida International Airport at Jewar is about to open. According to Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’, the airport will begin domestic and cargo flights in September 2025, followed by international flights in November 2025.
