New Delhi: As the New Year begins, Delhi continues to struggle with toxic air and dense smog, making it difficult for daily commuters to navigate the city. Smoke and dust pollutants, combined with chilly weather, have led to low visibility during the morning hours. Amid the smoke-laden air, the overall AQI in Delhi-NCR has been recorded at 386, which falls under the “very poor” category.
The AQI at Anand Vihar was recorded at 173, while Pitampura registered 180. People struggled to commute through city lanes as a thick layer of smog blanketed the capital, crippling visibility for residents. The freezing weather has worsened conditions, with the maximum temperature in Delhi expected to reach 17°C and the minimum 10°C, the IMD said.
Dense fog blanketing the national capital has prompted IndiGo Airlines to issue an advisory for passengers. The advisory stated, “Early-morning fog is expected to affect visibility across #Delhi. A few flights scheduled for tomorrow have been cancelled in advance to help reduce waiting time at the airport.”
Dense to very dense fog is expected in Delhi and surrounding NCR areas on the morning of January 2. Road, rail, and air traffic may be affected due to extremely low visibility. According to the weather department, minimum temperatures may drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius oer the next few days.
Daytime maximum temperatures are expected to remain 3 to 5 degrees below normal, making the cold even more biting. A cold day warning has been issued for January 2 in Delhi, with cold wave conditions likely in some areas. The administration has urged people to exercise special caution during early morning and late-night travel.
Surrounding areas in western and eastern Uttar Pradesh are also expected to be affected by toxic air on January 2. Visibility may be extremely low in the morning, particularly in western Uttar Pradesh. The weather station has issued a cold day warning for several districts. During this period, minimum temperatures are expected to gradually drop, while daytime temperatures will remain below normal. Farmers have been advised to take necessary measures to protect their crops from frost. Due to dense fog, drivers are advised to exercise extra caution on highways and rural roads.
