New Delhi: Haryana Police have registered an FIR against BJP councillor Naresh Kataria and his wife for allegedly holding their daughter captive and forcing her into marriage. The victim, Neha Kataria, also alleged that her parents had taken away her phone to prevent her from contacting anyone.
Using her presence of mind, Neha sent a complaint via email to the Sector 9 police station, the Haryana Chief Minister, the DCP, and the State Women’s Commission. Soon after receiving the email, police reached the sender’s location and rescued her. She informed officers that she had been held hostage for several days while wedding preparations were underway.
Neha’s parents had planned her marriage with a man named Nikhil. However, Neha wanted to marry a man identified as Abhishek, with whom she had been in a relationship for the past 15 years. According to a report in the Times of India, Kataria had approached a cousin about marrying Nikhil after his own daughter declined the proposal.
In her statement, Neha said she feared her family. Before further procedures, she underwent a medical examination. In the presence of a legal advisor, the alleged victim confirmed that she had contacted the police of her own volition.
Neha has now been shifted to a safe house. Although no arrests have been made so far, further investigation is underway.
Sector 9 Police have filed a case against Kataria and his wife under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officers added that the charges against the woman’s parents are bailable.
