New Delhi: Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds brought parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) to a standstill on Tuesday morning, disrupting travel and prompting leading airlines to issue urgent warnings to passengers about delays and hazardous conditions en route to the airport.
Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the region under a red alert, forecasting widespread rain through the final days of July. Light showers over the past 24 hours intensified into heavier downpours, with Delhi and Noida receiving the heaviest rainfall on Monday.
The downpour caused waterlogging and significantly reduced visibility during the early commute, resulting in long traffic jams across key routes leading to Indira Gandhi International Airport. Concerned about potential delays, airlines and Delhi Airport swiftly issued public advisories urging passengers to allow extra travel time and to keep a close watch on flight updates.
Delhi Airport authorities echoed these warnings, urging travellers to factor in sudden weather changes, extend their travel time to the airport and keep track of flight updates to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
Meanwhile, in a post captioned "A Rainy Day Reminder," IndiGo cautioned: "With heavy rainfall expected over #Delhi, we're seeing a chance of delays and slower traffic to and from the airport. Please check your flight status and consider giving yourself a little cushion of time."
SpiceJet also released an alert on X, stating: "Due to bad weather in Delhi (DEL) and Dharamshala (DHM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Please check your flight status."
Meanwhile, Air India advised passengers to prepare for possible disruption, posting: "Gusty wind and rain may impact flight operations to and from Delhi this morning... Allow extra time for your journey."
