Noida: A family in Sector 51 had a scary experience when they saw a long object inside the light vent on their false ceiling. At first, they thought it was an issue with the wiring. But they soon realized it was actually a snake moving inside the vent.
Terrified, the family stayed inside their home for almost two days. Finally, on Wednesday evening, officers from the Gautam Buddh Nagar Forest Department came and caught the snake, which brought great relief to everyone.
Forest officials shared that a rescue team had gone to the house on Tuesday, but they couldn’t find the snake. “We tried again on Wednesday evening and were able to catch it,” said PK Srivastava, the Divisional Forest Officer of Gautam Buddh Nagar.
They confirmed the snake was a cobra — a dangerous species often seen in green areas during the rainy season. Officials believe the snake entered the house through an opening in the ceiling, possibly because of the recent heavy rains. A video later shared online showed the black cobra moving through the ceiling vent.
“We think it entered through the ceiling and went into the light fixture,” one official added.
Once they saw the snake, the family quickly ran out and informed their neighbors, which caused panic in the area.
Sanjeev Kumar, the general secretary of the Sector 51 Residents Welfare Association (RWA), said the cobra was around five feet long. “At first, the family thought it was a wiring issue. But when they saw it move, they knew it was something else. They told us, and we immediately called the forest department. There are many empty plots in the area, and snakes often come from there. We’ve spoken to the authorities about this before,” he said.
The RWA even brought in a local snake charmer to try to catch the cobra, but that didn’t help. The family, which included an elderly couple, two children, and two house helpers, shifted to the upper floor of their two-storey house for safety. However, their kitchen was on the ground floor, and they couldn’t reach their medicines, which made things very stressful.
“Forest officials warned that we might have to remove the whole ceiling to find the snake. Luckily, that didn’t happen,” said Kumar.
Vidyasagar Pandey, a junior forest officer who had been trying to find the snake since Tuesday, said they used a special powder in the ceiling area to try and bring it out. “We told the family to call us the moment they saw anything move. When they did, we rushed back and found the snake near the kitchen chimney. We caught it safely around 6:30 pm and released it in the Okhla Bird Sanctuary,” Pandey said.
DFO Srivastava added that the forest team “worked very hard for more than 36 hours to rescue the cobra.” He also mentioned that during this time of year, they usually get reports of five to six cobra sightings every month in Gautam Buddh Nagar. “If someone gets bitten and doesn’t get treatment quickly, it can be deadly within 40 minutes,” he warned.
