Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao along with other leaders T Harish Rao, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Padma Rao, Sabita Indra Reddy reached RTC Bhavan to protest the TGSRTC price hike.
Speaking to the media at RTC Bhavan, KTR said, “We called for the Chalo Bus Bhavan protest on behalf of the BRS to oppose the Congress government’s irrational hike for city buses."
“They claim buses are free for women, yet there aren’t enough buses or seats available. Instead of cutting services, the govt should increase the fleet. Calling it ‘free for women’ but doubling fares for men and hiking student buspass fees only burdens families. During our tenure, we gave ₹1,500 crore annually in grants to RTC, now, they’re privatising it," he said.
KTR and others met RTC MD Nagireddy and demanded rollback of the fare hikes and raised the issue of pending dues of Rs 1,353 crore under Mahalakshmi scheme and alleged that the state government is plotting to privatize RTC despite Rs 9,246 crore grants released.
“We demand the government roll back fare hikes and honour every assurance made to RTC employees,” he said.
What is the new fare structure:
Under the new fare structure, the fare will be hiked by Rs 5 in the first three stages while the fare will rise by Rs 10 in the fourth stage. For Metro Deluxe and e-Metro AC bus services, the increase will be Rs 5 in the first stage and Rs 10 thereafter.
It is termed as an infrastructure fees to fund an all electric bus fleet within the city limits. The TGSRTC plans to introduce 2,800 electric buses in the city over the next three years and the transition from diesel to electric buses will involve major costs of about Rs 392 crore.
