Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots: Director took a whopping one year to cast THIS character

Many believe that 3 Idiots, featuring Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan in the lead, was made to perfection. Apparently, blockbuster director Rajkumar Hirani spent an unusual amount of time on the casting, and his hard work paid off well, resulting in compelling on-screen performances by all the actors.

New Delhi: 3 Idiots is considered a cult classic of today's era. From love to friendship and comedy, the much-talked-about film brought a diverse range of emotions to the silver screen, leaving cinema lovers captivated. While almost every character in the Rajkumar Hirani directorial left a lasting impact on moviegoers, one, in particular, reduced them to tears. And, it was none other than engineering student Joy Lobo, played by Ali Fazal.New Delhi: 

There was an emotional scene in 3 Idiots where Joy's father, Michael Lobo, portrayed by Madhav Vaze, was seen inconsolable upon his son's death. The sequence left theaters in pin-drop silence, filling viewers with sadness.

Madhav's character might have appeared on screen for only a few moments, but the gentleness of his face is remembered to this day. Did you know that Raju postponed the shoot of the film for a year just to find the right actor for this role?

According to a TV9Hindi report, there was a time when the casting was finalised and filming was set to commence, but Raju couldn't find an actor for Joy's father. He wanted someone with whom the public would instantly connect and whose face would leave a lasting impression. Unfortunately, finding such an actor proved to be a challenging task.

Raju's casting team auditioned many people for this small but crucial role, but couldn't find anyone who matched his vision. In an interview, Rajkumar Hirani revealed that he came across many potential candidates, but none who truly fit the part. As time passed, he and his team grew increasingly frustrated, but Raju remained adamant about finding the perfect actor. He kept postponing the shoot for almost a year until he finally found 

What he was looking for.

The 62-year-old filmmaker shared that one day, while sitting in his office, his eyes landed on a magazine lying on the table. Interestingly, it featured a poster of a 1970s Marathi play with a child in the image.

Raju told his team, "That child's age must now be around the character’s age. The innocence on his face is exactly what I've been searching for." He then asked his team to track him down, which led them to Marathi theatre actor Madhav Vaze.

Who is Madhav Vaze?

Madhav Vaze may not be widely known in Hindi cinema, but he is a well-recognized figure in Marathi theatre. He has worked extensively in acting and direction and has been part of many prominent plays. Aamir Khan was so impressed with Madhav's performance in 3 Idiots that he even expressed interest in collaborating with him in theatre.

It wouldn't be wrong to say that Madhav breathed life into a small yet powerful role. His character remains one of the most unforgettable moments in the film.

3 Idiots Box Office Collection

According to Sacnilk, 3 Idiots grossed Rs 274 crore in India at the Box Office. The industry tracker further states that it raked in Rs 186 crore overseas, taking the total collection to Rs 460 crore.

3 Idiots also starred R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in pivotal roles. Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film worked wonders at the Box Office and emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film ever.
