Bengali Singer Lagnajita Chakraborty Abused on Stage Over Jago Maa Song

| Updated on: Dec 22, 2025 | 08:03 AM

A significant controversy has emerged in West Bengal following an incident involving Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty. Ms Chakraborty alleges that she was abused and threatened during a live performance at South Point Public School in Bhagwanpur, East Midnapore, on Saturday evening.

According to her complaint, the programme was proceeding smoothly until she performed "Jago Maa," a song from the film *Devi Chowdhurani*. Moments after, a man identified as Mehboob Mallick, a member of the schools governing body, allegedly rushed onto the stage, attempted to attack her, and shouted, "Enough of Jago Maa, now sing something secular."

The outburst was audible to the audience, leading Ms Chakraborty to stop her performance immediately. She subsequently lodged a formal complaint at the Bhagwanpur police station, and Mr Mallick has since been arrested.

The incident has swiftly escalated into a political storm. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has publicly claimed that the disruption reflects an anti-Hindu mindset in the region. This event has initiated a wider public debate concerning artistic freedom and perceived intolerance during cultural gatherings in the state.
