New Delhi: Vijay Deverakonda has finally opened up about the trolling he faced for adding ‘The’ before his name during the promotions of his film Liger in 2022. The move, intended as a branding idea by his team, backfired badly after the film’s failure, with Vijay becoming the target of online memes and criticism. In a recent interview, the actor explained that he had never wanted a tagline in the first place and had resisted the idea. Now, he has decided to drop it completely, choosing to be known simply as Vijay Deverakonda, nothing more, nothing less.

Vijay Deverakonda on the backlash against the ‘The’ prefix

Vijay Deverakonda has spoken about dropping ‘The’ from his name after receiving heavy trolling following Liger’s release. Vijay revealed it was his team’s idea, but he never wanted a tag. “I resisted this for a while, but people started coining their own terms. I do not want a tag and want to be known by name,” he shared.

They settled on ‘The’, though it sparked criticism. “I thought if you do need a tag, ‘The’ is enough. But, people went, ‘How can you put The?’”, he added.

Now, he’s done with it. Vijay shared, “If ‘The’ is a problem, then I don’t want it. I told my team to chop it off. Vijay Deverakonda is enough — it is what I want to be known by.”

He also shared he prefers letting his characters take the spotlight, adding, “I’ve asked my teams not to even add my name. I want people to know Suri and get into his life. I don’t want people to know Vijay Deverakonda, if I could have it that way.”
