Mumbai: Bollywood actress Kajol was heavily criticised after she stated actors work harder than 9-5 employees. Following the backlash, the actress has clarified her remark. She explained the nuances of her comment in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Speaking in the interview, Kajol described the intensity at sets that made it difficult for actors to take breaks. Additionally, she spoke of how they were constantly watched.
Giving an example of how different her life was to a person working set hours, she said, "I was at an event in Jaipur. The flight to Jaipur is at 7 am by the way. So I reached there, and the event was at about 3 pm in the afternoon. And I was sitting at this event and somebody asked me ‘You have such a glamorous life’. I said you’re only looking at it from the point of view that oh she is so well dressed, and she’s got makeup and she’s sitting here in front of me. But you don’t know that I took the 7 am flight in the morning for which I had to wake up at 5 in the morning and reach airport by 6. So that I could board the 7 am flight. And I have come here, got dressed, gotten ready, had lunch and then gone immediately do photos, one interview and then come to sit over here in this chair in front of you. So I have had a packed day from 5 in the morning."
"It’s a very on-the-ball kind of job. When you’re shooting, you have to be 100 per cent there. We shot continuously for about 35 to 40 days (for The Trial second season). You have to work out, eat right, and maintain your body because even a small change affects your look and costumes. That’s a huge pressure," said Kajol.
Further, comparing corporate jobs with acting, she stated, "When you’re doing a 9-to-5 job, you can take tea breaks or just relax for a bit. We can’t. We’re constantly being watched, how we sit, cross our legs, smile, or even move. Every moment is scrutinised. It’s like being a kettle that’s always boiling; you’re always alert, always a little paranoid. That’s how we live.”
The actress had made the controversial statement at the second episode of her chat show "Two Much With Kajol and Twinkle". The comment made on the episode that featured Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, was labelled as 'tone-deaf' on social media platforms.
