Ram Gopal Varma Reflects on Rangeelas Enduring Appeal and Production Secrets

| Updated on: Dec 03, 2025 | 02:59 PM

In a recent interview with TV9 Bharatvarsh, acclaimed filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma offered insights into his 1995 musical hit, Rangeela, ahead of its re-release. Despite three decades passing, Varma believes the film continues to resonate with audiences due to a combination of factors, including its memorable song picturisation and Aamir Khans highly relatable character.

Varma confirmed that actress Urmila Matondkar played a significant role in his decision to create Rangeela. He disclosed that his inspiration for the film stemmed from classic Hollywood musicals such as "The Sound of Music" and "Singin in the Rain." Interestingly, Varmas initial vision for Rangeela was a Telugu film, with Sridevi and Nagarjuna in the lead roles, and even considered Rajinikanth for a guest appearance in the part eventually played by Jackie Shroff. The interview also touched upon Varmas broader cinematic influences, including films like "Raat" and "Bhoot," which were inspired by "The Exorcist," as well as "Godfather," "Satya," and "Shiva."
