New Delhi: Returning with a directorial venture after almost three years, Nagesh Kukunoor delivers a well-paced, gripping thriller, The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case. While most of his previous movies and series revolve around lighter themes, Nagesh manages to make an excellent investigative film which follows Amit Sial and Sahil Vaid’s characters as CBI officers who have been organised into a Special Investigation Team and assigned one singular purpose - to find the perpetrators of the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
Based on the book ‘Ninety Days: The True Story of the Hunt for Rajiv Gandhi’s Assassins’, the series doesn’t rely on constant action sequences to keep the viewers hooked but instead opts for tense sequences made from tense investigative situations.
As is with most of Nagesh Kukunoor’s work, The Hunt: Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case has begun receiving praise from people who watched it, commending the use of an excellent cast over a star-studded one as well as the narrative style of the series. Unlike a lot of today’s content, The Hunt manages to balance showing personal aspects of the characters’ lives while also never quite losing track of the main purpose of the series.
It is a lesson in documenting and dramatising historical events without diluting the viewer’s interest or realism. It demands a little maturity from its audience but rewards it with authenticity and good filmmaking.
