Belagavi Farmers Protest: BJP Challenges Karnataka Government Over Agricultural Demands

| Updated on: Dec 10, 2025 | 08:25 AM

Belagavi, Karnataka – The winter session of the Karnataka legislature commenced amidst a large-scale farmers protest organised by the opposition BJP outside Suvarna Soudha. Approximately 20,000 farmers participated in the demonstration, raising crucial agricultural concerns.

Key demands included higher support prices for maize and sugarcane, the establishment of procurement centres, and addressing issues related to the Tungabhadra Dams crest gate.

Karnataka Minister HK Patil, however, criticised the protest as "unreasonable and immoral," suggesting that problems faced by farmers were created by the Central Government, particularly concerning minimum support prices (MSP) and sugar rates.

Conversely, BJP State President B. Y. Vijayendra asserted that the agitation targeted the Congress state government, which he accused of neglecting farmers. Other senior BJP leaders, including R. Ashoka, also joined the rally, highlighting the alleged inefficiency and infighting within the Siddaramaiah-led administration, which they claimed diverted attention from farmers distress. Protesters also sought compensation for flood-damaged crops.
