The Karnataka government's recent reversal of controversial tax notices issued to Bengaluru's small traders has brought an end to days of intense protests. The notices, primarily targeting vendors utilizing the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for transactions, sparked widespread outrage and concern among small businesses.

Many felt unfairly targeted, with accusations that the notices were based on insufficient understanding of their income and business practices. The issue was particularly acute for tea stall owners, condiment sellers, and petty traders who feared unjust taxation on even essential items like milk.

Some vendors even temporarily stopped selling milk-based products due to the perceived unfairness. The protests escalated rapidly, leading to significant disruptions and calls for the government to intervene. Following intense pressure and negotiations, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the withdrawal of the contentious tax notices.

This intervention effectively ended the strike and marked a considerable victory for the affected traders. Alongside the withdrawal, the government released revised guidelines to address the underlying concerns. The new guidelines clarify several key points.

Firstly, essential goods will be exempt from taxation, alleviating fears among vendors selling milk, fruits, vegetables and other staple items.

Secondly, the government will focus its scrutiny on traders exhibiting unusually high UPI transaction volumes, suggesting a more targeted approach to tax compliance. This aims to identify and address instances of tax evasion among larger businesses, rather than indiscriminately targeting smaller operators.
