The investigation into the tragic death of Fauja Singh, the 114-year-old "Turbaned Tornado" who inspired millions with his remarkable marathon running achievements, has yielded a significant breakthrough.

Punjab Police have identified the SUV involved in the fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed his life. The vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner with registration number PB20C7100, was captured on CCTV footage near the scene of the accident, which occurred near Beas, not far from Singh's native village in Jalandhar district.

Crucial evidence in the case includes not only the CCTV footage showing the Fortuner, but also fragments of a broken headlight recovered near the accident site. These fragments are believed to match the vehicle, providing compelling leads for the investigating officers.

A dedicated police team is now actively pursuing the driver of the Fortuner. A case has been registered at the Adampur police station under sections 281 and 105 of the Bhartiya Nyayasanetha.

Fauja Singh's story is one of incredible perseverance and inspiration. Born in 1911, he began running marathons at the age of 89, overcoming personal tragedies including the loss of his youngest son.

He participated in marathons across the globe, including London, New York, and Hong Kong, achieving remarkable times considering his age and a childhood condition that left him with weak legs. His achievements extend beyond sporting prowess; he also carried the Olympic torch in London in 2012 and was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to sport and charity.

His passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the globe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, describing Singh as an exceptional athlete who inspired generations. Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria also offered his condolences. Kulwant Singh, Fauja Singhs biographer, confirmed the news, recalling how the centenarian runner had once been advised to leave behind places of grief – a philosophy he embraced by focusing his energy on running.
