Telangana is poised to introduce a pioneering law that mandates financial responsibility for government employees towards their elderly parents. The proposed legislation would enforce a deduction of 10–15% from the salaries of employees found guilty of parental neglect, with the amount directly transferred to their parents bank accounts.
This initiative draws strength from the existing Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, which already designates parental care as a legal duty for children.
The new bill, expected to be tabled during the upcoming budget session, goes a step further by integrating this family obligation into official service conduct. While supporters view this as a crucial measure to combat the rising issues of abandonment, emotional neglect, and financial distress faced by senior citizens in an era of growing nuclear families.
Critics question the states role in defining and enforcing familial relationships. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has championed the move, emphasising societal responsibility.
