Haridwar: A video showing two youths roaming Har‑ki‑Pauri in Haridwar wearing Gulf‑style clothing (Kandura) has caused uproar in the holy city. The incident comes at a sensitive time when demands are being raised to ban non‑Hindus from entering Ganga Ghats during the Kumbh Mela.
Police identified the two men as Naveen Kumar and Prince, both 22 years old and residents of Haridwar. They were detained and questioned. During interrogation, they confessed that they had dressed in Sheikh attire to shoot videos for their YouTube channel, hoping to gain more likes and comments.
Viral video and speculation
The video quickly spread on social media, with some claiming the men were named Habibullah and Habibi and residents of Dubai. Priests at the pilgrimage site reported that when questioned, the youths initially identified themselves with these names before admitting they were social media influencers.
The police said both men admitted their mistake and apologized for hurting religious sentiments. They were released after being fined and warned not to repeat such acts in the future.
We can go anywhere
According to a PTI report, when priests asked them to leave, the youths argued that “India is open… anyone can go anywhere.” This statement further fueled anger among local religious groups.
Reaction of religious organizations
The incident has angered priests and members of the Shri Ganga Sabha, who said non‑Hindu structures and activities should not be allowed at Har‑ki‑Pauri. Shri Ganga Sabha Secretary Ujjwal Pandit expressed strong displeasure and filed a complaint with the police, demanding strict action against the youths.
Mahamandaleshwar and other religious leaders also voiced concern, saying such acts hurt the sanctity of Haridwar, which is revered worldwide as a center of Sanatan faith.
Police action
Police clarified that while the two men were released after a challan and apology, those who circulated incomplete or misleading versions of the video on social media are being identified. Action will be taken against them for spreading confusion and fueling speculation.
Growing tension over demands to restrict entry of non‑Hindus at Ganga Ghats
The incident at Har‑ki‑Pauri highlights the growing tension over demands to restrict entry of non‑Hindus at Ganga Ghats. While the two youths admitted their motive was to gain social media popularity, the episode has sparked a wider debate about faith, freedom, and respect for religious sentiments in Haridwar.
