Over 20 killed, 30 injured as train derailed after crane collapses in Thailand

New Delhi: More than 20 people were killed, and over 30 were injured after a crane collapsed on a moving train, leading to its derailment in Thailand on Wednesday. The train was travelling from Thailand's capital, Bangkok, to the country's northeast, according to initial reports. The death toll is expected to rise as several people are still trapped in the carriages.

The train bound for Ubon Ratchathani province was derailed after a construction crane fell on top of one of its coaches, killing at least 22 people, police said. "Twenty-two people were killed, and more than 30 were injured," a local police chief in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thatchapon Chinnawong, told news agency AFP. The incident took place this morning in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, 230 km (143 miles) northeast of Bangkok.

According to local media reports, the crane stationed near the railway track for a high-speed rail project collapsed and hit the moving train. The train derailed and briefly caught fire, which was extinguished immediately. 

Meanwhile, relief and rescue efforts are underway and Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. The injured people have been rushed to hospitals for medical treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Thai government's PR department said that the construction crane fell onto the passing train around 9.05 am today. The incident left more than 30 passengers injured, while some were trapped in carriages, it said, adding that multiple rescue teams have been pressed into service.
