New Delhi: An 88-year-old retired IPS officer from Chandigarh starts his day by cleaning up the litter at his neighbourhood, aiming for a cleaner environment. The man, identified as Inder Jit Singh Sidhu, resides in the IAS-IPS Officers’ Cooperative Society in Sector 49, and takes a rehri to collect from his society regularly.
The elderly who retired from the Punjab police in 1996 as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) was disgusted to witness garbage around his area on a regular basis. Even after repeated complaints to the authorities, no measures were taken on their side. As a result, the old man decided to resolve the matter in his way.
Initially, a lot of people mocked him for his behavior, but that did not act as a hindrance to his sustainable goals. The retired IPS officer considers cleanliness of the environment equivalent to godliness. He continued to collect litters in the unused rehris of the sanitation workers and disposing off to right locations. Soon, the local residents started appreciating his efforts and now a significant number of people joined to support him in his mission.
Sidhu added that he was saddened by the fact that his beloved city Chandigarh, has ranked so low in the Swacch Sarvekshan. He claimed that the city, which is considered the "City Beautiful," should aim for a position higher in the cleanliness index. The 88-year-old mentioned that he is unbothered about people's opinions about him and would continue to contribute to the environment till his last breath.
The Chandigarh citizen believes that if every native starts to take steps for a clean environment, the place could easily achieve the top rank. Appreciating his efforts, a resident suggested that the Municipal Corporation to make him the city’s ambassador of the Swachhta Abhiyan. The administration must support Sidhuji and recognise his work, the Tribune quoted a local as saying. Residents like Inder Jit Singh Sidhu continues inspire people for greater good.
