C.P. Radhakrishnan, the Governor of Maharashtra, has been named the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election scheduled for September 9th.

The announcement, following a BJP parliamentary board meeting, comes weeks after the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Radhakrishnan, a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu, brings a strong background in grassroots politics, having served as the BJP president in Tamil Nadu from 2004-2007. His experience also includes serving as the Governor of Jharkhand and holding various positions within the BJP.

The NDAs substantial majority in Parliament assures Radhakrishnan a likely victory. However, the timing of his nomination, particularly given the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, suggests a possible strategic play by the BJP to garner support in the south.
