Fresh Violence Erupts in Assams Karbi Anglong Over Land Dispute

| Updated on: Dec 24, 2025 | 09:42 AM

Fresh violence has erupted in Assams Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, prompting state authorities to suspend internet services to curb the spread of rumours and prevent further escalation.

The unrest stems from a long-running land dispute where local tribal groups are demanding the eviction of alleged encroachers from protected tribal grazing lands.

They claim illegal settlers, primarily migrant communities, have occupied land reserved exclusively for tribal use.

Tensions, which had been building for weeks, escalated in Kheroni following a 15-day hunger strike by various organisations demanding eviction. Although the protest was called off after government talks, underlying anger persisted.

The situation turned violent when two opposing groups clashed, leading to stone-pelting despite prohibitory orders. Police intervened with lathi charge and tear gas, resulting in at least eight injuries, including police personnel and a journalist.

Protesters also set vehicles on fire, exacerbating the conflict. Curfew has been imposed, additional forces deployed, and senior ministers are on the ground to manage the volatile situation.
