India-Bangladesh Tensions Flare Amidst Protests and Diplomatic Actions

| Updated on: Dec 24, 2025 | 09:45 AM

India and Bangladesh are experiencing heightened diplomatic tensions following a series of protests and incidents on both sides of the border. In India, the Vishva Hindu Parishad and other groups staged demonstrations across cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata, condemning alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, sparked by the lynching of Dipu Chandradas.

These protests led to heavy police deployment, lathi charges in Kolkata, and detentions in other cities as demonstrators attempted to march towards Bangladeshi diplomatic missions.

The Government of India summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riyaz Hamidullah after Dhaka expressed concerns over security around its diplomatic missions. In response to the unrest, Bangladesh temporarily suspended consular and visa services in New Delhi and Agartala.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh itself grappled with protests over the killing of Inqilab Manch leader Sharif Usman Hadi. Bangladesh’s interim chief adviser, Mohammad Yunus, condemned both killings, assuring speedy justice, financial assistance to Dipu Chandradass family, and protection for all citizens, as a speedy trial tribunal has been initiated amid mounting political pressure ahead of national elections.
