Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has addressed the ongoing trade challenges between India and the United States, acknowledging significant hurdles while maintaining a focus on the broader strength of the bilateral relationship. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave in New Delhi, Minister Jaishankar stated that while some issues are open for negotiation, there are others that are not, subtly referencing India's "red lines".

He highlighted the lack of a "landing ground" in trade discussions, which has resulted in tariffs being levied on India. A particular point of contention mentioned was a "second tariff" imposed due to India's energy sourcing from Russia, a measure Jaishankar publicly deemed "very unfair," noting that other nations also engage in similar practices, some with more antagonistic relationships with Russia.

Despite these specific disagreements, he urged a proportionate view, asserting that a large part of the India-U.S. relationship continues as "business as usual" or has even strengthened. He affirmed the commitment to negotiating, discussing, and resolving these issues without allowing them to undermine the overall partnership.
