Ernakulam: 3 young medical practitioners are being hailed for performing an emergency surgical procedure on the road using a razor blade and straw and saving the life of a youth injured in a road accident in Kochi.
Doctor couple Thomas and Dhidiya, as well as Dr. Manoop, who were passing by the area at that time of the accident, rushed to help the accident victim lying on the road with injuries on the face.
Linu was struggling to breath which could lead to respiratory arrest due to blood clotting on the airway. Subsequently, the three doctors swung into action. They decided to try their best at the spot. Police and locals also extended help. Locals arranged for a razor blade and a plastic straw, while also switching on the flash lights of their mobile phones.
People also cooperated by not taking mobile videos of the procedure. After performing surgical cricothyroidotomy, Linu was shifted to a hospital. Dr Manoop accompanied the patient in the ambulance.
"The young doctors have set a model by initiating in providing emergency care to the accident victim with the available resources," IMA state president Dr M N Menon and state secretary Dr Roy R Chandran said in a statement.
The Indian Medical Association has appreciated the doctors for their initiative.
VD Satheeshan heaps praise on the doctors in Facebook
In a Facebook post, leader of opposition VD Satheeshan lavished praises on the doctor couple Thomas Peter and Didiya Thomas of Ernakulam Indira Gandhi Co-operative Hospital, along with Dr B Manoop, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Kottayam Medical College, for their gesture.
Satheeshan said the doctors saved the life of the injured man in a cinematic manner.
"Saving a life"... holding someone by the hand and bringing them back to life. That is an act bearing the imprint of God's own hand," he said in a FB post.
Detailing the incident, the LoP said the doctor couple were on their way to church when they noticed two people lying on the road, bleeding after a road accident at Udayamperoor. Dr Manoop also happened to be present at the spot at that time, he said. One of the injured persons was in a critical condition.
With no time to lose, the doctors carried out an emergency life-saving procedure on the spot, using the light from mobile phones, he further said in the FB post.
"Using the light from mobile phones, an emergency surgical procedure was performed right in the middle of the road. Local residents and the police extended assistance," he said.
Within four minutes, the doctors ensured that a person would survive, Satheesan said.
The Congress leader said he was amazed when he came to know about the incident, and so he called the doctors personally and conveyed his happiness and appreciation.
