Thiruvananthapuram: Looking to carry the positive trend in favour of Congress-led UDF in Kerala, the Congress leadership has confirmed the entry of three regional parties – All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) led by PV Anwar, Janadhipathya Rashtriya Party (JRP) led by CK Janu and VSDPS (Vaikunda Swamy Dharma Pracharana Sabha) led by Vishnupuram Chandrasekharan to its fold.
The official decision was conveyed to the media by senior Congress leader VD Satheeshan.
The political move by the Congress party 4 months away from the crucial state assembly elections is a clear indication that the party has received signals from the party high command to begin preparing for the assembly elections which is expected in April, 2026.
“All the three parties approached us with a request. We deliberated at the coordination committee and have decided to make them part of the broad alliance and ensure that the Congress-led UDF returns to power in the up coming assembly elections”, said VD Satheeshan.
“They will be made associate members of the UDF”, he said.
Interestingly, VD Satheeshan was against PV Anwar joining the UDF fold during the Nilambur by-polls. However, the latest decision reflects a change in political strategy ahead of the crucial assembly polls. With 10 years in opposition, the UDF is looking nothing less than a victory in the assembly polls. The recent victory in the local body polls have given the Congress a political thrust and a moral upper hand unlike the LDF which saw setbacks in many of its strongholds including Kollam, Alappuzha and Kannur.
CK Janu’s party and VSDPS had severed ties with the NDA earlier due to difference of opinion between the leaders of the parties.
Congress-led UDF is hoping that the entry of three regional parties will further enhance its position in Trivandrum rural, Wayanad and Nilambur constituencies where the party faces stiff challenges from the BJP and CPI(M).
