New Delhi: A former Inspector General of Police (IG) in Punjab, Amar Singh Chahal reportedly shot himself at his home in Patiala on Monday. He was gravely injured in the incident and was immediately admitted to Park Hospital in the city. He is currently undergoing treatment here, said reports.
The investigators recovered a note from the house where the former IG had mentioned that he was a victim of financial fraud. He said that this episode had pushed him into very deep financial crisis. He reportedly lost more than Rs 8 crore to fraudsters.
The police however have said that they are investigating the matter from all angles. They said that they are trying to ascertain the exact reason, which might have led the police officer to try to take his own life.
In a statement, the Patiala Police said, "We received a call from the friends of our retired IG that he might attempt suicide. Soon after a police team, of the SHO, DSP and other senior officers reached his home. We found him in an injured state there."
The police said that he was immediately moved to the hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. His condition continues to remain critical and doctors are making all efforts to save his life, they added. THe police also confirmed the recovery of the suicide note from the house of the retired officer and said that investigations are on in the case.
An FIR has also been registered in the matter, said the PRO of Patiala Police.
