Kannur: A village in north Kerala in Kannur district is now in the limelight for its achievement in water conservation and resource management. Payam Gram Panchayat in Kannur has won in the ‘Best village Panchayat’ category along with Dubbiganipalli in Andhra Pradesh. The award was declared by the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Both Payam and Dubbiganipalli has been declared as Joint Winners under the Best Village Panchayat category for the 6th National Water Awards for the year 2024.
The recognition highlight the sustained efforts of Gram Panchayats in water conservation and participatory resource management. Their work contributes meaningfully to the broader vision of Jal Samridh Bharat, and sets an example of how local governance can lead transformative change in securing water for future generations.
The award ceremony will take place on 18th November 2025 at Plenary Hall, Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, will confer the awards.
Payam is a Grama Panchayat in the Iritty taluk of Kannur district, with its administrative center located at Madathil. The panchayat is divided into several wards, including Perinkeri, Mattini, Kiliyanthara, and Vallithode.
