New Delhi: The mystery over the death of a woman whose body was discovered under mysterious circumstances in Vishal Khand-2 of Gomti Nagar continues.
The woman's body was propped upright against a wall over a roadside drain. From a distance, it gave passers-by the impression that she was simply sitting there.
The woman has been identified as 37-year-old Rekha Verma from Aliganj. However, the post-mortem report has provide no definitive cause of her death, police have said.
However, police have hinted at the possibility of poisoning, possibly through a medicine or narcotic substance. A murder case under Section 103(1) of the BNS has been registered. The FIR was filed at the Gomti Nagar police station based on a written complaint submitted by the woman's family.
Gomti Nagar station house officer Brijesh Chandra Tiwari reportedly said that the exact cause of death could not be determined. The viscera and heart have been preserved for further probe. The woman’s body had been placed to appear as if she was sitting, apparently to mislead investigators, according to sources. The passers-by assumed the woman was taking rest. However, when she did not move for a long time, local residents informed the police.
A HT report quoted the SHO as saying that the police have identified the autorickshaw allegedly used to dispose off the body, after scanning a number of CCTV cameras. Operation is on to trace the auto.
Police have also confirmed that the body showed grip marks, mud stains, and it seemed that the body was dragged before being placed in an upright position.
Four teams have been reported set up to investigate the case, after charges under 103(1) of the BNS were added to it. A police source told HT that a man who knew the woman well, and is suspected of disposing of the body, has been taken into custody. All call records, financial transactions, and recent activities of the man are being scanned. Investigators are also retracing the woman's movements after she left her Aliganj house around 11 am on Sunday. The police are reportedly questioning her family members too.
It has been found that Verma was unmarried. She lived with her brother Rakesh Verma. Her father, Chander Prakash, a roller driver with the PWD, was no more. Verma had sold off a piece of her land recently, her family said. Officials said they were scanning financial records and phone details to find out whether a land deal or any personal dispute could have been a reason behind the murder.
On its official handle, the Samajwadi Party (SP) hit out at the government. The post said: “Sisters and daughters are unsafe in the capital of UP. A young woman was murdered in Lucknow’s VVIP Gomti Nagar. Extremely tragic!”
Taking to X, the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) state unit said: “Daylight murder of a young woman in Lucknow’s upscale area! A suspect was spotted in CCTV footage, but UP Police is still saying ‘investigation is ongoing”. Law and order have completely collapsed.”
