New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a police constable appointed by Madhya Pradesh Police allegedly received a salary of Rs 28 lakh, for over a decade, without reporting for duty, or undergoing compulsory training after his recruitment in 2011-12. The constable named Abhishek was primarily posted in Bhopal and was supposed to receive his training in Sagar, but the man never showed up at the centre.

Instead of completing his training, Abhishek returned to his hometown Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh and never reported to his service since 12 years. During this period, he never returned to his duty and had not even applied for a leave. He still managed to draw his salary during that period, The New Indian Express reported.

Accused never reported for his duty

Abhishek, originally from Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district, was one of the recruits in the 2011-12 batch of state police. He arrived days later after his batchmates at the Bhopal District Lines reported in the cetnre. Following the induction, Abhishek was subsequently sent to the police training centre in Sagar.

However, instead of going for the training, the accused went to his hometown and never returned for his training or reported for his duty over these years.

When confronted, Abhishek sent his service file by speed post, citing that he is undergoing psychiatric treatment. Adding to the controversy, the service file was accepted by the authorities without any verification. Subsequently, the accused drew his salary without any further inquiry.

Major discrepancies found in departmental files

The incident came to light in 2023, after a routine inquiry of service records of constables was carried out in the department. Assistant Commissioner of Police Ankita Khaterkar said that she was shocked to see the discrepancies of the department. There were neither duty records or punishment records found in the files. Upon being summoned, Abhishek revealed that he has not reported for duty even for a single day.

Abhishek has already returned Rs 1 lakh to the department and had promised to pay the remaining money in installments.
