New Delhi: Toyota Kirloskar Motor has issued a recall for more than eleven thousand units of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder after a faulty fuel gauge was identified in the petrol variants of the SUV. The recall affects 11,529 units manufactured between December 9, 2024 and April 29, 2025, according to data shared by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. Strong hybrid variants are not affected because they use a digital instrument cluster.
This comes at a time when the Hyryder has been one of Toyota’s top performers in the mid size SUV market. The model sold over sixty thousand units in FY25 and has already crossed fifty six thousand units this fiscal year. A fuel gauge issue, however, is the kind of small but serious glitch that can turn into a bigger safety concern if ignored.
The problem lies in the analog fuel gauge fitted only on the petrol versions. SIAM stated that under specific conditions, the gauge may show an incorrect fuel level. If the tank level drops below the threshold, the low fuel warning lamp might not activate. This could leave the driver unaware of a near empty tank. The organisation added that in such a case the engine could stall due to a no fuel situation. That is a risk few drivers want to experience on a highway or during peak hour traffic.
Toyota is reaching out to owners directly and will replace the faulty part at no cost once the vehicle is inspected. Owners can also check for themselves by entering their VIN on Toyota’s recall page. I tried the portal earlier today and it flagged affected models instantly, which is useful for buyers who may have purchased a used Hyryder.
This recall also extends indirectly to Maruti Suzuki, as the Hyryder is a badge engineered twin of the Grand Vitara. Maruti had recently announced a similar recall for 39,506 units of the Grand Vitara manufactured during the same period. Both SUVs share major components because they were jointly developed by Toyota Motor Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation.
The Hyryder currently sits just behind the Hyundai Creta in mid size SUV sales. While recalls can cause temporary concern, they usually help strengthen long term confidence if handled transparently. Most carmakers prefer voluntary recalls for exactly this reason.
