New Delhi: If you pile together the aspiration of a human life, then somewhere at the top will be a Mercedes-Benz, which for years has been one of the ultimate signs of luxury and success. A Mercedes is almost a social symbol and a statement of what luxury, tech and motoring marvel should be like.
A very few brands can say that they changed the course of the automotive industry with some revolutionary tech, or powertrain. However, Mercedes stands apart as being the one who can legitimately say that they brought the industry to life. Based in Stuttgart, it was Karl Benz’s Patent-Motorwagen of 1886 that is regarded as the world’s first practical automobile.
From then on, Mercedes just went from strength to strength in all the virtues imaginable.
Mercedes has always been a pioneer in safety systems, advanced powertrain technology and redefined luxury through the years. In early breakthroughs like crumple zones and ABS, to later innovations like the airbags, ESP and even in ADAS, having one of the most sophisticated systems in the world. Which is why Mercedes is a trend-setter in all things that today appear as standard.
If the first 70 years were about building an industry and creating a name for themselves, the next would be defined by a car that has made the feature-list an important part of purchasing. Launched in 1972, the S-Class quickly became the brand’s technological flagship and one of the finest specimens in the limousine world.
Through the decades, it has introduced things like anti-lock braking systems, traction control, adaptive suspension, advanced crash safety structures, and later, semi-autonomous driving aids. Most of these have now filtered through segments and shaped modern cars. In fact, it was a well-known theory that what a new S-Class would introduce is what would appear as standard a few years down the line in standard cars.
Apart from technology, S-Class also improved on comfort, refinement and craftsmanship that the competition needed to match with. Each era has gifted the world something or the other and re-invented the auto sector, and that is what makes the S-Class and Mercedes just so special.
It isn’t just muscular engines and toughness, but about craftsmanship and refinement. Through its different iterations, Mercedes have made the autoworld stand apart. Not to mention that the three-star has dominated Le Mans 24, Grand Prix and other motorsports as well.
